About The American Shorthair Breed
The American Shorthair is has its roots in early settlers to what we now know as the United States of America. With their instinctive hunting abilities they were perfect “ratters” on ships that were sailing over from Spain, the United Kingdom and many other colonising countries. The cats were known as domestic shorthairs and went on to become known as American Shorthairs.

American Shorthairs are medium-sized, muscular cats typically weighing in at 2 to 7 kilograms.
American Shorthair Personality
American Shorthairs have kept the hunting abilities which led to them crossing the Atlantic ocean however they are gentle cats that excel in family environments. The shorthair is not overly active, enjoys play as much as a standard cat but is also quite content snoozing for an afternoon if there is no activities to be had. The American Shorthair is not one for being picked up and cuddled, very much an independent animal however will appreciate the comforts that come with a warm family home.
American Shorthair Health
American Shorthairs have a good bill of health usually but it is always important to ensure that if you are getting a pedigree or mixed that any ailments are identified. A form of heart disease known as Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has been seen in the breed, but it is not yet known to be genetic.
Caring for American Shorthairs
It is recommended that you brush your American Shorthair multiple times weekly to remove excess hair and keep the coat in good condition. It is important to ensure that nails are trimmed, ears and eyes are cleaned at regular intervals and of course the all important annual vet checkup. The American Shorthair is a friendly, affectionate cat however as much as it enjoys attention the Shorthair also has a good dose of independence. It is recommended that a balance between attention and independence is struck to ensure that the animal is as happy as possible. With other pets it is important to slowly introduce any cat friendly dogs to ensure maximum compatibility.
