Here at Kitty Mad we’re not what you would call avid Daily Mail readers but very recently we spotted a news article on the Daily Mail with a typical “headline = proof” headline, the headline in question:
Extreme PMS? Scientists say the symptoms may be caused by a parasite carried by your CAT
Hoooooooold on. That is a Daily Mail diagnosis if I have ever seen one. Scientists .. all of them? Two of them? Now yeah, we’re not going to change the way the Daily Mail write headlines but we read a bit more of the article to try and at least ascertain whether cats were to blame for all severe PMS.
So basically there is this organism known as “Toxoplasma Gondii” which is transmittable to humans from animals that carry it and it turns out that feline litter tray contributions can contain this organism and the organism itself can see through its entire life within a cat. The organism can also be found in raw meat. Yes, raw meat, something that is likely handled a lot more than cat droppings and cat litter.
The study itself which was conducted by researchers from the Juarez University of Duango State in Mexico studied 151 women with PMDD, taking blood samples to identify how many had toxoplasma of which they identified 10.
There are no further indications from the researchers that it is CATS that cause PMDD or PMS. The researchers themselves admitted that the sample was small and that more research was needed to verify any claims.
So if you suffer from PMDD or severe PMS or even if you don’t – avoid handling soiled kitty litter … as if that wasn’t obvious in the first place.
